Legal amendment to ensure population-based inclusive representation

KATHMANDU:- The government has established legal provisions to determine percentages based on population for the proportional election system.

To this end, the Council of Ministers has approved an ordinance and submitted it to the President.

In accordance with the arrangements for the House of Representatives constituencies, legal provisions will be enacted through the ordinance to establish percentages for Dalit, Indigenous, Ethnic, Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim groups.

On Thursday, the Cabinet resolved to amend the Election Act to adjust the percentages of various groups in line with the final report of the National Population Census 2078 BS.

As stated by Minister for Communications and Information Technology Jagadish Kharal, an ordinance has been issued to revise the schedule of the House of Representatives Member Act, 2074 BS, based on the updated population data of Dalit, Indigenous, Ethnic, Khas Arya, Madhesi, Tharu, and Muslim communities.
