1,136 families contact to get registered as landless

KATHMANDU:- A total of 1,136 families have come into contact with government authorities seeking to be listed as landless following recent evacuation drive in the Kathmandu Valley.

According to KVDA Development Commissioner Januka Dhakal, so far, a total of 1,136 households, comprising 4,804 individuals, registered at the data collection centre set up at Dasharath Stadium. After clearing settlement built along the Bagmati and Manohara riverbanks of Kathmandu Valley, the government authority is conducting a detailed study and collecting data of the genuine landless squatters.

The government authorities have begun compiling records to arrange housing for displaced landless residents.

Displaced individuals from squatter settlements in Kathmandu are being managed in coordination between the Kathmandu Valley Development Authority (KVDA) and the Kathmandu Metropolitan City under the Ministry of Urban Development. Teams from the KVDA, along with the Bagmati Civilisation Integrated Development Committee, are collecting data on families displaced from settlements along the Bagmati riverbanks in Thapathali (Ward 11), Gairigaun (Ward 9), and Shantinagar (Ward 31), as well as from the Manohara riverbanks, including Gothatar Buddhachowk (Ward 8) and Manohara Tole (Ward 9) in Kageshwari Manohara Municipality.

Out of the 4,804 individuals who came into contact with the government, 564 have been provided with accommodation.

She informed said that on Saturday, a total of 850 individuals from 181 households approached the authorities.

Of them, 147 individuals from 33 families were accommodated at the Radha Swami Satsang building in Kirtipur, while 193 individuals were placed in hotels. Others opted to make their own arrangements.

On Sunday, 1,570 individuals from 390 households came into contact with authorities, of whom 147 were accommodated in hotels. On Monday, 1,535 individuals from 365 households reached out, with 67 placed in hotels. On Tuesday, 10 individuals were accommodated in hotels. By assessing family backgrounds and specific needs, the government aims to develop a long-term rehabilitation and management plan for those affected by the evictions.

After identifying genuine landless persons, the government plans to relocate the genuine landless squatters to the integrated housing project at Ichangu Narayan in Nagarjun Municipality and other locations.

The government is continuing efforts to manage squatters living in areas such as Kageshwari Manohara Municipality while reclaiming encroached land.
