Robin Sherchan demands postponement of NRNA’s scheduled election schedule

TOKYO:- Robin Prasad Sherchan, Vice President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA) and candidate for the post of President in the upcoming 12th General Convention, has demanded the immediate postponement of the association’s announced election schedule.

Issuing a special appeal on the eve of the general convention scheduled for March 14-16 in Kathmandu, Sherchan urged the election committee to suspend the election process due to the current international situation and procedural disputes within the organization.

Sherchan has put forward the recent uncomfortable developments, especially in the Middle East region, as the main reason. Stating that thousands of Nepalis are looking to the NRNA with hope and trust in this hour of crisis, he has argued that focusing only on elections and positions, forgetting human sensitivity, would be against the core essence of the organization.

He said that the general convention would be incomplete without the broad participation of elders and activists, as the travel of delegates from Europe, America, and the Middle East itself to Nepal has become uncertain due to insecurity in the Middle East.

Similarly, Sherchan has warned that moving forward without correcting the technical and legal errors within the organization would be suicidal.

He expressed serious dissatisfaction that the official details of the total registered members, including verification, have not been made public, the list of NCC members and members who have not paid their fees is still opaque, and the mandatory 30-day deadline set by the statute has not been followed.

He has emphasized that even amidst all these problems and disputes, if a general convention is unavoidable, then the leadership should be selected unanimously, not through electoral competition.

Reminding that the wounds of rift and bitterness caused by the delegate dispute at the 2021 general convention have not yet healed, Sherchan said that ignoring anyone’s legal rights again will cause further damage to the organization.

He has made it clear that he will not participate in the controversial process and will not tarnish the dignity of the organization, declaring that the organization and its credibility are more important to him than his position. He has proposed that the general convention should be held with greater unity only after the situation normalizes and all delegates are guaranteed security.

Vice President Sherchan has appealed to all non-resident Nepalis around the world to be patient and restrained, saying that the NRNA must set an example of cooperation and unity in times of crisis to make it strong, unified, and responsible.
