Political parties begin submitting closed lists of PR candidates

KATHMANDU:- The political parties have started submitting their closed lists of the Proportional Representation (PR) electoral system contesting the upcoming March 5 election, according to the Election Commission (CE).

The EC, a constitutional body mandated to conduct and monitor the election, issued a press statement today in this regard.

Some political parties have submitted the list today itself, as the EC had called for the submission of the list by 4 PM today. The submission can be made by the same time tomorrow.

In a press statement issued by EC Joint-Secretary and Spokesperson Narayan Prasad Bhattarai, three political parties have submitted their lists fulfilling all procedures by Sunday noon.

The Nepal Workers Peasant Party, Janapriya Lokatantrik Party and Shram Sanskriti Party completed the registration process by producing the documents and the EC conducted a cross-check on the candidates’ names whether they were listed in the voter list or not, the EC stated.

Once the submission is made within the given timeline, the Commission will look into the matter to confirm if the closed lists comply with the election laws or not.

The Commission will thereafter publish the closed lists and the final lists subsequently, said Spokesperson Bhattarai.

Earlier, 100 political parties had registered their parties to participate in the election under the PR electoral system with 93 electoral symbols.

It may be noted that the interim government formed in the wake of the September’s Gen-Z Movement in the premiership of Prime Minister Sushila Karki is mandated to conduct the House of Representatives (HoR) election.

Accordingly, the interim government announced to conduct the election on March 5, 2026.

There are more than 18.89 million eligible voters registered and those registered voters can cast their votes in two ballot papers each for the PR and direct electoral systems. (RSS)
