NHRC urges government to fix issues seen in prisons across the country

KATHMANDU:- The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has urged the government to show seriousness in fixing the problems surfaced in prisons across the country.

Issuing a press statement today, NHRC’s spokesperson Dr Tikaram Pokharel said security challenges have been augmented when the prisoners escaped from the jails and weapons looted from the police have yet to be returned.

“The government has been instructed to come up with serious measures to resolve the security challenges evolved after the Gen Z Uprising “, the statement noted. As per the information received, there has been a budget deficit for the reconstruction of physical structures damaged during the Uprising and for essential materials for detainees in prisons. “The human rights commission urges the government to seriously address the issues surfaced in the prisons”. It is stated.

The human rights constitutional body had carried out monitoring of the status of prisons within the Kathmandu Valley following the Gen Z Uprising on November 13-14. Likewise, the NHRC has started monitoring detention centers located out of the Valley through its province and province section offices. RSS
