Nepal observes International Migrants Day, Minister announces task force for safe labour migration

KATHMANDU:- Nepal marked International Migrants Day today with a special program at the Ministry of Labour, Employment and Social Security. The event included government officials, development partners, NGOs, and Numan Özcan, the International Labour Organisation (ILO) Country Director for Nepal.

Minister Rajendra Singh Bhandari said the week-long observance is sufficient to launch meaningful reforms in the labour migration sector, guided by the principles of the Gen Z movement, and announced a special task force—including the Central Investigation Bureau (CIB)—to develop strategies for safe, dignified, and rights-respecting foreign employment.

ILO Country Director Özcan highlighted the importance of improving Nepal’s foreign employment system and emphasised collaboration with the government and stakeholders to ensure migrant workers’ security, dignity, and rights.

The 25th International Migrants Day, observed December 18–24, includes discussions, awareness campaigns, health and blood donation camps, debates, and public outreach in Nepal and through Nepali missions abroad.
