KATHMANDU:- The Nepali Congress has demanded action against those responsible for the incidents that took place on September 8 and 9 during the Gen Z movement. Spokesperson Devraj Chalise issued a statement on Saturday evening, making public the party’s position on the arrest of Former Prime Minister and UML Chairman KP Oli and Former Home Minister and party leader Ramesh Lekhak.
The statement said that the party is clear that action should be taken against those involved in the incidents of September 8 and 9. The Congress has also pledged to support the government in this work. Chalise said that the public should know who was involved in the arson and destruction not only on September 8 but also on 9.
“Anyone involved in the incidents of the two days should be held accountable. We stand with them,” the statement said. “In this, hasty decisions taken without the government’s self-restraint and maturity may weaken the rule of law and the country may once again descend into conflict and instability. Therefore, the Nepali Congress urges the government to be serious in this regard.”
The Congress has commented that the government appears selective in hastily arresting the current government for implementing the report, when the outgoing interim government led by Sushila Karki was in the study phase of the inquiry commission report and had decided to submit it in the upcoming cabinet meeting after completing the entire study and make it public by keeping it on record in Parliament.
“The decision to form a study committee in the case of the security mechanism among the individuals and bodies recommended by the commission in the March 27 meeting and to act accordingly, but to implement it immediately in the case of others, and to arrest them hastily, shows that the government’s behavior has been selective even in the same incident of September 8, the same investigation report, and the same recommendation.” “Such selective behavior by the government is wrong. This failure to follow the established procedures of the law seems to further complicate the process of ultimately getting justice, and it seems that the government is trying to do more politics in the incident rather than conducting a fair investigation and delivering justice,” the statement said.
The Congress has also raised questions over the report not being made public in a proper manner. The Congress believes that the report published in the media is prima facie against the rule of law and flawed as it looks at the incident of Bhadra 23 in detail but ignores the incident of September 9.
The report also mentions that the investigation into the September 9 incidents was not conducted, stating that if that is the case, the report is one-sided and incomplete, and will also strengthen the question raised by the Supreme Court about the impartiality of Commission Chair Gauri Bahadur Karki.
