China says, ‘Nepal supports GSI’, The ruling NC objects, ‘Nepal not participate in GSI’

KATHMANDU:- The ruling Nepali Congress has objected to a statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs stating that Nepal supported the Global Security Initiative (GSI) launched by China during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s ongoing visit.

The ruling Nepali Congress party has objected to the statement released by the Chinese Foreign Ministry about the meeting between President Xi and Prime Minister Oli, which stated that Nepal supported the Global Security Initiative (GSI) put forward by China.

A statement issued by the Chinese Ministry of Foreign Affairs said, “Nepal supports the Global Development Initiative (GDI), Global Security Initiative (GSI), and Global Civilization Initiative (GCI) proposed by China.”

Referring to Prime Minister Oli’s response during the meeting, it was also said that Nepal is committed to the ‘One China Policy’ and expects to further deepen cooperation in the context of the Belt and Road Initiative.

There has been a long-standing dispute in Nepal over the issue of participating in the Global Security Initiative (GSI), as mentioned by the Chinese side.

Prakash Sharan Mahat, spokesperson for the ruling Nepali Congress, has responded that Nepal will not participate in the GSI after the Chinese side mentioned it in a statement during Prime Minister KP Sharma Oli’s ongoing visit.

However, Beijing has been claiming that the GSI is not a security alliance.

“Remember, Nepal’s leftist governments have been participating in the Global Security Initiative (GSI) and China’s Global Development Initiative (GDI).

Foreign affairs experts say Nepal should be clear about the issues included in the Chinese side’s statement regarding the GSI.

The concept paper released by China’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs on February 21, 2023, states that its purpose is to address the causes of international conflicts, eliminate instability, and promote joint international efforts.

But now the GSI is being interpreted as an attempt by China to create a separate security alliance.
