Balearic Islands become new route for irregular migration to Europe

MADRID:- Concern is growing in the Balearic Islands after a surge in migrants arriving from Algeria in small boats. “The migration route between Algeria and the Balearic Islands to Europe is growing rapidly,” warned Marga Prohens, president of the Balearic government. “More than 4,700 migrants have arrived so far in 2025, a 77% increase compared to 2024.”

The Balearic Islands are experiencing strong immigration pressure, especially in Ibiza and Formentera, where the reception centers still have no opening date.

Prohens called on the central government and the European Union, (EU) to immediately deploy Frontex to the islands, citing information already shared by the agency, warning of an increase in the arrival of small boats via this route.

She also called for strengthening cooperation with Algerian authorities to prevent a humanitarian crisis.

In the last 20 days, 1,500 migrants have arrived, making the Balearic Islands a key point of irregular migration to Spain.

Meanwhile, arrivals to the Canary Islands and the mainland have fallen, although a meeting with the European Commissioner for Home Affairs is planned for the end of September to address the crisis.
