Kamal Thapa objects to Finance Minister Wagle’s statement in Delhi
KATHMANDU:- RPP leader Kamal Thapa has expressed his objection to remarks made by Finance Minister Swarnim Wagle. Speaking at the NDTV World Summit 2026 held in New Delhi, Finance Minister Wagle stated that the era of nationalism in Nepal—characterized by anti-Indian sentiment—has come to an end.
He remarked, “At one time in Nepal, nationalism was viewed in connection with anti-Indian sentiment. However, that era has now ended.”
According to leader Thapa, this statement by Wagle constitutes a blatant devaluation of Nepali nationalism.
He stated, “In the context of Nepal-India relations, the remarks recently made by Dr. Swarnim Wagle in Delhi are not only objectionable but also constitute a blatant devaluation of Nepali nationalism. Nepali nationalism has never been predicated on opposition to any specific country.”
He further argued that making such claims on a foreign platform—asserting that “the era of anti-India nationalism has ended”—thereby undermining issues of national concern, is entirely irresponsible.
He remarked that viewing the national sentiment of the entire country through the lens of the exceptional views held by a small group is a product of a prejudiced perspective.
Thapa added, “Nepal’s nationalism is centered on safeguarding the nation’s sovereignty and the interests of the Nepali people. We desire a relationship with India based on equality and mutual respect; however, speaking out against transgressions—such as border encroachments, inundation, or blockades—does not constitute ‘anti-Indianism,’ but rather an unwavering loyalty to the nation. Have these voices, raised in the national interest, now become irrelevant?”
He has raised the question: could this statement by Wagle be a product of the self-destructive ‘Monroe Doctrine’ that was put forward in the past?
He asserts that an individual holding a responsible position must provide a response to this statement. Leader Thapa has also demanded to know the government’s stance on this matter.
