Malaysia to increase workers’ wages, now minimum wage will be Rs 75,000

KATHMANDU:- The Malaysian government has announced an increase in the monthly minimum wage for workers in the country by 300 ringgit, raising it to 2,000 ringgit. Malaysian Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim announced the wage hike on Friday while presenting the budget for 2027 in the Dewan Rakyat, the lower house of Parliament.

All workers currently employed in Malaysia will benefit from the increase in the monthly minimum wage from 1,700 Ringgit (63,000 Rupees) to 2,000 Ringgit (75,000 Rupees). The new wage scale will come into effect in June 2027.

It is reported that more than 4 million workers employed in Malaysia—including the 450,000 Nepali workers there—stand to benefit from the wage hike implemented by the country. Along with increasing the wages of unskilled workers, the Malaysian government has announced pay raises for semi-skilled and skilled workers as well.

Malaysia has announced that Government-Linked Investment Companies (GLICs) and Government-Linked Companies (GLCs) will raise workers’ monthly wages from 3,100 Ringgit to 3,400 Ringgit.

It is reported that approximately 230,000 workers will benefit from this move. Additionally, the Malaysian government has announced plans to tighten tax-related regulations to curb the employment of undocumented migrant workers in the country.

Worker wages in Malaysia have increased by approximately 89 percent between 2013 and 2025. This rise in remuneration has occurred since the implementation of the minimum wage policy in 2013. In 2013, the monthly minimum wage for workers in Malaysia was 900 Ringgit; following successive increases, it reached 1,700 Ringgit by August 2025.
