Role of Diaspora Journalists Crucial in Connecting Nepal with the World: Nirmala Sharma

TOKYO:- Nirmala Sharma, Central President of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ), has stated that Nepali journalists based abroad serve as a bridge connecting Nepal with the rest of the world. Speaking at the inaugural session of the ‘FNJ Global Media Conference Japan 2026’—organized by the FNJ Japan Chapter in Tokyo on Saturday—President Sharma emphasized the crucial role journalists play in strengthening the voice of the diaspora.

In her address, Sharma noted that the journalism sector is simultaneously facing new opportunities and serious challenges alongside the development of information technology. “Not all content appearing on social media constitutes journalism,” she said. “We need to distinguish between misleading content found on platforms like YouTube and TikTok and professional journalism. Disseminating truthful, factual, and impartial information is the primary duty of a journalist.”

Likewise Harihar Kanta Paudel, Nepal’s Chargé d’Affaires to Japan, has stated that the state and the journalism sector are not rivals but rather complementary to each other. Speaking on Saturday at the ‘FNJ Global Media Conference Japan 2026’ in Tokyo—organized by the Japan Chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ)—Paudel emphasized that the government and the media sector need to move forward in close partnership, akin to the inseparable bond between a fingernail and the flesh.

In his address, Acting Ambassador Paudel noted that journalism in the digital age is facing serious challenges alongside new opportunities. Expressing concern particularly over “misinformation” and misleading news spread via social media, he urged for vigilance regarding professional journalism and the dissemination of factual information.

Likewise Robin Sherchan, Senior Vice President of the Non-Resident Nepali Association (NRNA), has stated that Nepal’s journey toward prosperity is possible only through collaboration between Nepali journalists living abroad and the NRNA.

Speaking at the ‘FNJ Global Media Conference Japan 2026’ held in Tokyo on Saturday—organized by the Japan Chapter of the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ)—Sherchan emphasized that the relationship between journalism and the NRNA should not be limited merely to the exchange of news. He stated, “Today, the Nepali diaspora across the globe possesses immense knowledge, skills, capital, and experience. Journalism must play the role of a strong bridge connecting this strength to Nepal’s development and prosperity.”

The event was attended by central office bearers from Nepal, provincial presidents, and representatives from 11 overseas branches.
