Democratic senators urge Mullin to ensure body cameras for immigration officers
In the letter, the senators stated, "Although DHS has previously acknowledged that body-worn cameras boost public trust and enhance the safety, accountability, and transparency of both officers and the public, the department has clearly not prioritized the procurement of cameras."
WASHINGTON:- Following shootings targeting immigrants in Texas, Florida, and Maine, members of the U.S. Senate Democratic Caucus have urged Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin to provide ‘body cameras’ for all federal immigration officers.
In a letter dated July 19 addressed to Mullin, 38 Democratic senators and Independent Senator Angus King of Maine (who caucuses with the Democrats) made this request while seeking information regarding the shootings that took place this month—involving 52-year-old Lorenzo Salgado Araujo in Houston and 25-year-old Johan Sebastian Duran Guerrero in Biddeford, Maine.
In the letter, Democratic senators wrote, “The unnecessary loss of human life in these incidents demands an immediate, comprehensive, independent, and transparent investigation—involving the full participation of local and state law enforcement officials; furthermore, a thorough review of law enforcement procedures, training, and operational tactics is required to prevent such tragic incidents.”
Pressing Mayorkas on the issue of providing body cameras to immigration officers, senators noted that Congress has appropriated $175 billion for the department since last year.
In the letter, the senators stated, “Although DHS has previously acknowledged that body-worn cameras boost public trust and enhance the safety, accountability, and transparency of both officers and the public, the department has clearly not prioritized the procurement of cameras.”
None of the ICE officers involved in the shootings in Texas, Florida, and Maine were wearing body cameras.
They wrote in the letter, “Contrary to recent statements by the department and the White House, DHS had more than enough time and budget to purchase and deploy body cameras for every officer before the end of 2025.”
Last year, Congressional Republicans—without Democratic support—allocated approximately $175 billion to DHS for immigration enforcement, detention, and deportation. By September 2029, DHS had spent $75 billion in funding for ICE and Border Patrol.
After Democrats refused to provide additional funding for the DHS until restrictions were placed on ICE and Border Patrol agents following the killing of two U.S. citizens—Alex Pretti and Renee Good—by federal immigration agents in Minnesota, Republicans appropriated the funds through party-line votes.
At that time, one of the Democrats’ demands was for immigration officers to wear body cameras. Top Trump administration officials—including then-Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen—had stated that immigration agents would be provided with body cameras.
In the letter, the senators wrote, “Recent tragedies confirm that none of these commitments were honored.”
