‘Attempts to intimidate the opposition by bringing the judiciary and CIAA under control are unacceptable’

KATHMANDU:- Former Prime Minister and former President of the Nepali Congress, Sher Bahadur Deuba, has announced that he will soon return to Nepal. In a two-page statement issued on Tuesday to mark BP Memorial Day, he pledged to return to the country soon and play an active role in strengthening the democratic movement and constitutionalism. However, the specific date of his return has not been disclosed.

He flew to Singapore for medical treatment on the 17th of Phagun, at a time when the country was immersed in election activities. His wife, Arzu Rana Deuba—who was in India at the time—had also traveled to Singapore from there.

Subsequently, a video surfaced showing the Deuba couple sightseeing in Hong Kong. In Nepal, an investigation into money laundering charges against them is ongoing, and arrest warrants have been issued. While their current whereabouts and condition remain unclear, this statement also does not mention an address.

In a statement issued from an undisclosed location, he has expressed deep concern over the growing tendency to exert pressure on democracy, the constitution, and constitutional institutions. He warned that attempts to bring the independent judiciary and the Commission for the Investigation of Abuse of Authority under executive control—thereby turning them into tools to intimidate the opposition—are unacceptable.

Pointing out that the protection of democracy, national unity, and cooperation are the primary needs of the hour, Deuba states that the Nepali Congress is no longer limited to the role of the opposition but now bears the historic responsibility of safeguarding democracy, the constitution, and the security of citizens.

Noting that his thoughts and concerns remain focused on the country and its people despite residing abroad, he stated that the nation needs unity rather than division, trust rather than mistrust, and cooperation rather than retribution. Furthermore, he has called upon political parties, civil society, and all Nepalis to stand united and firm against activities that undermine the democratic system.
