No ‘transit visa’ required for Nepali passport holders through Hong Kong transit

KATHMANDU:- The Hong Kong government has abolished the transit visa that it issued for Nepali passport bearers travelling from Nepal through Hong Kong to other countries and from other countries to Nepal on the condition that they remain within the transit area.

The Consulate General of Nepal in Hong Kong has stated that the government of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region of China has made this provision effective from today, Saturday (15 November 2025).

The Consulate General of Nepal, through a press release on Friday, stated that due to continuous diplomatic efforts and requests, the government of China’s Special Administrative Region, Hong Kong, has implemented this arrangement.

The rule requiring Nepali passport holders to obtain a transit visa when travelling through Hong Kong International Airport has been in effect since June 2005.

The Consulate General has expressed the confidence that there will be ease of travel for Nepali passport bearers travelling via Hong Kong after the Hong Kong government removed the mandatory provision for transit visas.

It also stated that this provision is believed to encourage Nepali passport holders to travel via Hong Kong transit.

The press release reads: “This step by the Hong Kong government is commendable and praiseworthy as it will help strengthen the bilateral relations between Nepal and the Hong Kong government.

Therefore, the Consulate General of Nepal wishes to thank the Hong Kong government on behalf of the Government of Nepal.”
