Sherchan honored Aryal by draping a traditional shawl around him during the event, which was held at Gazebo Restaurant in Shin-Okubo, Tokyo.

Aryal launched his book in the context of the recently concluded 20th Asian Games in Aichi-Nagoya. The book launch took place in Nagoya on September 18, with Harihar Kanta Paudel, the Chargé d’Affaires for Japan, presiding as the chief guest. Sherchan was also present at the launch event.

Speaking at the honoring ceremony, Sherchan said, “I am delighted to honor author Aryal here in Tokyo—who traveled a long way from Nepal for the launch of this book—for successfully delving into the history of sporting relations between Nepal and Japan. I would like to thank the author for this.”

Although I had not previously had the opportunity to read any documentation regarding the sporting ties between Nepal and Japan, this book gave me the chance to understand the multifaceted nature of the relationship between the two countries. I feel proud to be able to share with my contemporaries in Japan how the relationship between our nations has expanded through sports.

At the event, ANFA Japan President Khadka expressed his happiness at being able to honor Aryal—who is also a senior journalist—in Japan. He said, “When we used to play football in Nepal, he would come to Dasharath Stadium to cover the matches.”

We—the players—had not fully realized the significant contribution we had made in fostering relations between Japan and Nepal through our sport. However, the author has documented the contributions of my seniors and myself, presenting the facts in simple, accessible language. I would like to extend my heartfelt thanks to the author, Mr. Aryal, for this.

Gauchan, the Honorary President of ANFA Japan, also thanked the author for including his contributions in the book. He remarked, “Your book has truly given us a reason to feel proud.”

At the event, businessman Binod Sherchan also praised the hard work put in by author Aryal. Senior sports journalist and author Nabin Aryal expressed his gratitude on the occasion, stating, “I had never imagined I would be honored in this way in Tokyo, the capital of Japan.”

He described the book titled ‘Nepal-Japan Sports Relations’ as a document that illustrates the relationship between the two countries. He expressed optimism that the book would play a significant role in further strengthening the ties between Nepal and Japan.

At the event, ANFA Japan welcomed sports journalists from Nepal—including Binod Pandey, Mahesh Acharya, Prakash Timalsina, Subash Humagai, and SK Sharma, who had arrived to cover the Asian Games—by draping traditional *khadas* around their necks. Journalist Mohan Ghale moderated the program.

COLORADO:- “Wake up, son; Baba and I have come all the way from Nepal to see you.” These are the cries of his mother, Sangita, uttered in a semi-conscious state during the final funeral rites for her son.

Amidst a flood of tears and his mother Sangita’s semi-conscious grief, the final cremation ceremony for 18-year-old Bijay Pandey—who had come to America harboring dreams of a bright future—was held in Colorado today.

The funeral rites for Bijay Pandey, who died in a road accident on August 29, were held after his parents arrived in Colorado from Nepal.

Bijay, the eldest son of Ganesh Prasad Pandey and Sangita Pandey from Biruwa in Nepal’s Syangja district, had arrived in Colorado only about eight months prior. He was involved in a road accident on the night of August 29 while returning to his residence after finishing work.

The parents, having lost the support of their old age following the news of their son’s untimely demise, had arrived in Colorado from Nepal. Family members, relatives, friends, and members of the Nepali-speaking community in Colorado attended the memorial and funeral services.

During the funeral rites, Vijay’s mother, Sangita Pandey, was repeatedly overcome with emotion. She repeatedly kissed her son’s cheek before collapsing in a faint. The sight of her expressing her love for her son one last time deeply moved everyone present. Similarly, his younger brother, Aryan Pandey, could not hold back his tears before his brother’s body. The scene of him bidding a final farewell while washing his brother’s face with his tears was deeply poignant.

Bijaya’s father, Ganesh Prasad Pandey, performed the principal rites for his son’s final cremation in accordance with Hindu religious customs and traditions. After completing religious rituals such as *Pinda-daan* (offering of rice balls) and the ceremonial lighting of the pyre, he activated the switch of the electric crematorium to conclude the final cremation of his son, Bijaya.

Pandit Rupnath Bhattarai and Pandit Chudaprasad Neupane conducted the necessary religious rituals in accordance with Hindu traditions and customs.
Representatives from various organizations in Colorado, social activists, intellectuals, community members, relatives, and well-wishers attended the cremation ceremony. The attendees expressed their sorrow over Vijay’s untimely passing and offered their condolences to the bereaved family.

At the event, social worker Nandalal Neupane provided a brief overview of the tragic incident.

Vijay had come to the United States with the dream of building a future for himself and his family through hard work, a journey he had undertaken from a young age. However, a road accident shortly after his arrival brought his life’s journey to a premature end.

His untimely passing has caused deep anguish to his family, relatives, friends, and the Nepali community in Colorado. For the family, this is not merely a funeral service but an incredibly painful moment to bid a final farewell to their beloved son.

Deeply saddened by the human and physical losses caused by the severe floods in their homeland, Nepal, the Magar Association of America had launched a fundraising campaign to support relief and rehabilitation efforts.

The funds were deposited into the Prime Minister’s Natural Disaster Relief Fund during the “Lamp-Lighting and Relief Fund Handover Program 2026″—held on September 28, 2026, at the central office of the Magar Association of America for victims of natural disasters—in the presence of Hon. Indira Rana Magar (former Deputy Speaker and current Member of the House of Representatives of Nepal) and Dadhiram Bhandari (Consul General at the Consulate General of Nepal in New York).

On behalf of the organization, Deep Sagar Budha Magar, President of the Magar Sangh America Central Committee, and Ratna Singh Garbuja Magar, President of the Magar Sangh America New York Chapter, handed over a symbolic check to former Deputy Speaker Rana Magar and Consul General Bhandari. Magar Sangh America and its affiliated chapters had collected the funds from well-wishers.

Consul General Dadhiram Bhandari expressed his gratitude to the Magar Association of America and all contributing donors for mobilizing support and contributing to the relief fund for those affected in the motherland during this tragic time of disaster. Recalling how, just three days after the natural disaster struck Nepal, the Consulate General in New York had organized a program appealing to all Nepali organizations to raise financial aid, he acknowledged with appreciation the Magar Association of America’s significant fundraising efforts, which served to help heal the wounds of the motherland.

Similarly, Honorable Indira Rana Magar expressed her gratitude to the Magar Association of America for the financial assistance provided for relief and rehabilitation efforts following this unimaginable natural disaster, which caused immense loss of life and property. Addressing the ceremony, she thanked everyone who extended support and showed goodwill toward Nepal after the floods. Noting that such assistance would significantly bolster the government’s relief and rehabilitation campaign, she assured that the funds would be utilized in a responsible and appropriate manner.

Dip Sagar Budha Magar, President of the Central Committee of Magar Sangh America, recalled that since its inception, the organization has consistently stood by affected citizens during every disaster in the motherland, Nepal, providing substantial financial assistance; he assured that such support would continue in the future. Expressing gratitude to all Magars residing in the US who contributed to the campaign, he emphasized the need for flood-affected families to receive relief and rehabilitation support as soon as possible.

Magar Sangh America was established in New York on March 28, 2004, with the objective of uniting all Magars—both Nepalis and those of Nepali origin—scattered across the United States under a single umbrella organization. The association aims to foster mutual interaction and cooperation while preserving and promoting the language, attire, cultural heritage, rituals, and traditions of the Magar community—which embodies unity in diversity—and to coordinate and collaborate with other Nepali communities in the U.S.

Currently, the Magar Sangh America Central Committee and nine chapter committees under it have been formed across 12 states in the United States.

LONDON:- The Gurkhas—who boast a history of over two hundred years of service, dedication, and sacrifice in the British Army—have once again approached the British government to demand their rights and equal treatment. Citing a lack of expected results from years of negotiations, government commitments, and various phases of protest, the British Gurkha Satyagraha Joint Struggle Committee has issued a formal ultimatum to the British government to resolve the outstanding issues by December 31, 2026.

In a letter sent to British Prime Minister Andy Burnham on October 1, Krishna Bahadur Rai, the chief coordinator of the committee, warned that if the key demands of the Gurkhas are not addressed within the stipulated timeframe, peaceful protests, hunger strikes, and solidarity movements would be resumed in both the UK and Nepal.

This warning represents not so much the start of a new Gorkha movement as a continuation of dissatisfaction regarding long-unfulfilled commitments. According to the struggle committee, Gorkhas have served the British Crown with loyalty for generations, yet issues concerning pay, pensions, resettlement, identity, and equal treatment remain unresolved.

The letter recalls the 1923 UK-Nepal Treaty of Friendship and the 1947 Tripartite Agreement, reiterating the demand for the implementation of provisions ensuring that Gurkhas serving in British units receive equal treatment alongside other members of the main army. According to the struggle committee, although the spirit of the agreement is clear, Gurkhas have faced inequality in practice for decades.

A government-to-government dialogue between Nepal and the UK was initiated in 2017 to address the Gurkha issue. As a result, a technical committee report covering various aspects was prepared in 2018. This report was viewed as a crucial foundation for a long-term resolution to the Gurkha issue. However, according to the struggle committee, years have passed since the report was finalized, yet its key recommendations remain unimplemented.

After a long wait, dissatisfied Gurkha campaigners once again took to the streets and staged hunger strikes in 2021. Subsequently, on August 19, 2021, an agreement was reached on a framework to resolve the remaining Gurkha issues through government-to-government negotiations, based on the 2018 technical report. British officials at the time had also pledged to move towards resolving the issue. However, according to the committee, the expected results did not materialize even after that.

The issue of equal pensions has remained one of the most sensitive aspects of the Gurkha movement. The struggle committee has consistently demanded that equal pensions be granted to Gurkhas, with retrospective effect from their past service periods. Citing the example of the 1999 John Spellar review—which introduced retrospective changes to the Gurkha pension system—the letter argues that a similar principle could be applied in the present instance as well.

The committee has also raised serious questions regarding the provisions governing the calculation of service duration under the ‘Gurkha Offer to Transfer’ scheme. The letter cites an example where actual service of 33 years prior to 1997 was effectively reduced to the equivalent of approximately nine years for pension calculation purposes. Similarly, the committee highlighted the precedent set during the 1948 transfer from the Indian Army to the British Army, where service rendered in the Indian Army was recognized on a one-to-one basis for pension and gratuity purposes.

The struggle committee has also demanded a clear response from the UK government regarding the legal status of the tripartite agreement. The letter asserts that the interpretation—whereby the agreement is not considered subject to judicial review under UK domestic law—has made it difficult for ex-Gurkhas to seek legal redress. On this basis, the committee has raised a crucial question: if the tripartite agreement is not legally enforceable, what is the legal and reciprocal basis for recruiting Nepali citizens into the British Army since 1948?

The Gurkha movement is currently raising issues that go beyond just pensions; matters such as identity, military status, and the transparency of historical documents have also become significant aspects of the movement. The committee has stated that two letters sent by its independent advisor, retired Lieutenant Colonel Hamish Adams—seeking a written response to the fundamental question, “Are Gurkhas soldiers of the British Army?”—remain unanswered.

The committee has presented this issue not merely as a routine administrative query, but as a matter directly linked to the constitutional and military identity of the Gurkhas. Therefore, the memorandum demands that the British government provide a clear and formal written response regarding this matter.

Similarly, a demand has been made to make public historical records related to Gurkha recruitment and terms of service. The committee has raised questions regarding transparency, noting that old files—which ought to be accessible under regulations concerning public records—remain unavailable.

Time has become a major concern for the leaders of the Gorkha movement. The struggle committee claims that more than 20,000 affected ex-Gorkhas have passed away since the movement began. Noting that many of the remaining ex-servicemen have reached old age and their numbers are dwindling year by year, the committee has warned that any further delay could extinguish the opportunity to secure justice.

The letter states, “Any further delay is not merely inaction; it is permanently depriving those who have waited a lifetime for justice of that justice.”

Reiterating its long-standing demand for equal treatment for Gurkhas recruited between January 1, 1948, and September 30, 1993, the struggle committee has urged the UK government to ensure that the next generation does not have to wait for justice.

Despite the stern ultimatum, the struggle committee has kept the door open for dialogue. The committee has stated that it is ready to sit for talks with the UK government at any time to reach a just and long-term solution.

She received this prestigious honor in recognition of her continuous service to the community, volunteer work, and contributions toward promoting Nepali culture.

While volunteering, Anya paid no heed to the weather or the time. She never expected rewards or recognition; her priority was simply how she could help others, give back to the community, and bring about positive change.

She has remained consistently active in a wide range of areas—from assisting teachers at the Nepali language school, guiding young children, and actively participating in community activities, to promoting Nepali art and culture.

Through her dance performances set to Nepali music, she has showcased Nepali culture at various events and festivals. She has always been at the forefront of representing Nepal and the Nepali community at diverse community events across New South Wales.

It is precisely this selfless service, dedication, and love for the community that has earned her a significant honor today.

For Anya’s parents, this moment is filled with pride and deep emotion. For them, it is not merely a matter of family joy but also a moment of pride for the entire Nepali community in Australia.

Anya, who currently resides in the small NSW town of Dubbo, has conveyed a beautiful message through her actions: bringing about significant change does not require advanced age or a high-ranking position; all that is needed is a heart willing to help others and strong determination.

It is hoped that this achievement by Anya—who has been instrumental in showcasing the culture and identity of the Nepali community within Australia’s multicultural society—will inspire the new generation to engage in volunteerism and embrace a sense of responsibility toward the community.

NEW YORK:- The Non-Resident Nepali Association National Coordination Council (NRNA NCC) of the USA has submitted a 17-point set of suggestions to Foreign Minister Shishir Khanal, who is currently in New York to attend the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly.

A team led by NCC President Satendra Sah met with Minister Khanal and submitted a memorandum addressing the issues and rights of Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) and the diaspora’s participation in Nepal’s development. Recalling the collaboration with the government on relief and reconstruction efforts following the floods in Bhote Koshi and Rasuwa, the memorandum emphasizes the need to revise the draft Non-Resident Nepali Act (2083 BS), ensure the practical implementation of NRN citizenship, guarantee investment security, and establish provisions for voting rights from abroad.

The proposal calls for the formation of a joint technical task force comprising the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the NRNA to finalize the Non-Resident Nepali Act. Furthermore, it urges immediate amendments to—or the issuance of a mandatory timeline for amending—laws related to land revenue, immigration, foreign currency, and securities to facilitate the practical implementation of NRN citizenship.

It has also been suggested that arrangements be made to collect applications for Non-Resident Nepali (NRN) citizenship and distribute online identity cards directly through Nepali diplomatic missions abroad. The memorandum calls for the regularization of assets acquired prior to the enactment of the Act, tax exemption on annual family remittances of up to Rs 25 million, the seamless repatriation of capital and dividends, and the retention of the facility for a free 10-year multiple-entry visa.

In accordance with the Supreme Court’s order, calls have been made to arrange voting for Nepalis abroad—either through diplomatic missions or via technology—and to issue directives enabling Non-Resident Nepalis (NRNs) to access the secondary share market, as well as to operate ‘Diaspora Bonds’ and a ‘Motherland Fund.’ It has been proposed to establish a joint ‘Single Service and Grievance Redressal Desk’—comprising representatives from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the Investment Board, and the Department of Industry—to facilitate investors, and to operationalize a ‘Diaspora Expert Network’ and a ‘Knowledge Bank’ through an executive decision even before the enactment of the relevant legislation.

Emphasis has been placed on adding adequate staff to high-demand missions to strengthen consular services, transferring positions from missions slated for closure, fully digitizing consular services, establishing permanent emergency rescue teams and 24/7 hotlines for the Gulf and conflict-affected regions, and setting up legal aid funds for workers and students at the missions.

A demand has been made to establish a dedicated ‘Diaspora Coordination Center’ under the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to foster long-term collaboration, and to expand access to Nepali language classes and open university programs for second- and third-generation Nepali children. A team led by Sunil Sah, Chief Patron of NRNA USA, prepared the draft of this proposal.

Upon receiving the memorandum, Foreign Minister Khanal stated that it is the government’s policy and priority to engage the diaspora as a key partner in Nepal’s economic transformation. Outlining the government’s vision for leveraging the knowledge, skills, capital, technology, and networks of the Nepali diaspora for the country’s economic development and transformation, Minister Khanal also emphasized the commitment to further strengthening bilateral relations.

At the beginning of the program, Bhushan Lal Shrestha, President of Colorado Newa: Khalah, welcomed everyone present and highlighted the significance of the event.

Addressing the event, Chief Guest and Boulder City Mayor Aaron Brackett expressed his delight at participating in Indra Jatra—a festival rich in art, culture, and traditional values—and highlighted the sister-city relationship between Boulder and Kathmandu, while also sharing experiences from his visit to Nepal two years ago.

The program, skillfully hosted by Atisha and Samjhana, featured performances such as the Dhime dance, Lakhe dance, and dances reflecting Newa culture, alongside a beautiful performance by the Mandala Band.

Similarly, ‘Samaybaji’ was distributed as ‘Prasad’ to everyone present at the event. Seeing so many participants adorned in traditional Newari attire created the impression that one was sitting at Basantapur Dabali, watching the program.

Indra Jatra is not merely a festival but represents “our history, identity, and an invaluable heritage passed down through generations.” Such events are crucial for keeping the unique identity of the Nepali and Newa communities alive amidst diverse cultures, and members of both the Nepali and American communities have participated in the program to experience Nepal’s rich Newa culture.

In a multicultural society like the United States, preserving festivals such as Indra Jatra is essential for passing on indigenous traditions and culture to future generations.

The event, held at the premises of the Nepali Cultural Center, featured more than 15 stalls representing organizations—such as Nepali Ghar and Blood Donors of America—as well as insurance companies, banks, and various other businesses.

The event, which ran from 12:00 PM to 5:00 PM, allowed participants to enjoy free entry and entertainment while also tasting ‘Samaybaji’ served as ‘Prasad’.

Indra Jatra is one of Nepal’s oldest and most significant festivals. Historians believe it originated around the 10th century during the reign of King Gunakamadeva, the founder of Kathmandu. It is believed that the tradition of celebrating Indra Jatra began alongside the establishment of the city of Kathmandu and the development of its urban civilization.

According to legend, when Lord Indra came to Earth to pluck Parijat flowers for his mother, the residents of Kathmandu mistook him for a thief and bound him; however, upon realizing his true identity, they released him with honor. It is believed that the tradition of celebrating Indra Jatra originated in commemoration of this event.

For centuries, the Newa community has made an unparalleled contribution to shaping Nepal’s civilization through its language, literature, sculpture, architecture, music, festivals, the *Guthi* system, and communal lifestyle. Indra Jatra is a celebration that embodies all these cultural values and philosophies of life.

Colorado Newa Khala has been organizing Indra Jatra annually with the aim of connecting the new generation—born and raised in the United States—to their language, religion, traditions, and unique cultural identity.

The organization has been actively working to preserve Newa culture, conduct educational programs, foster community unity, and expand cultural ties between Nepal and the global community.

By reviving Nepal’s millennia-old civilization and cultural heritage on American soil, the fifth Indra Jatra held in Colorado is envisioned not merely as a festival, but as a shared celebration that connects people with their roots, identity, and culture.
