A day of mourning to be observed, Wednesday public holiday

KATHMANDU:- The government has decided to observe a day of mourning and a public holiday on September 17 in honour of those who were martyred during the recent Gen Z movement.

The government has decided to declare those who were killed during the September 8 and 9 ‘Gen-Z’ movement as national martyrs.

Home Minister Om Prakash Aryal shared that the first meeting of the newly formed cabinet held today decided to hoist the national flag to a half mast and perform final rites of the martyrs with national honour.

He said that the government has decided to provide Rs 1.5 million as financial assistance to the families of the martyrs.

The compensation will be provided by the Ministry of Finance and Home Affairs and the concerned district administration office. The meeting decided to provide free treatment to the injured, free arrangements to take the bodies to the respective places and help in the cremation process.

Home Minister Aryal further informed that the meeting also took a decision to form a high-level inquiry commission under the coordination of a former justice to investigate the loss of life and property that took place during the movement. He said that necessary action will be taken on the basis of the commission’s report.

Similarly, it has been decided to build ‘Gen-Z Memorial Park’ in memory of those who lost their life in the protest.

Home Minister Aryal informed that the meeting also decided to send back all the proposals submitted in the previous cabinet meeting but without a decision to the concerned ministry.
