Governor Gavin Newsom marks Fourth of July with a call for a renewed fight to defend democracy

Governor Gavin Newsom today released his Fourth of July message, calling on Americans to meet this moment with the same courage that has defined generations of movements to expand and protect democracy.

In his remarks, the Governor warns that the nation’s democratic promise is under threat from President Trump, who has repeatedly undermined the will of the people, from attempts to overturn the 2020 election to ongoing attacks on voting rights and election integrity.

Governor Newsom highlights California’s ongoing efforts to protect the right to vote from interference. The Governor also announced that he is working with the Legislature on new legislation that would make it a felony to seize ballots before election results are certified.

As Americans mark the 250th year of the adoption of the Declaration of Independence, the Governor urges people across the country to do more than celebrate freedom — to defend it: by participating, voting, and standing up for the democratic promise that belongs to every American.

Happy Independence Day.
