Parties fail to agree on govt formation in Madhes Province

DHANUSHA:- The political parties in Madhes Province have failed to forge an agreement for the formation of a new government. A meeting of seven political parties held on Thursday could not strike a deal.

The Nepali Congress and the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party did not budge from their stands of not letting other parties to lead the government.

NC, JSP, Janamat Party, Loktantrik Samajbadi Party Nepal, CPN (Maoist Centre), CPN (Unified Socialist) and Nagarik Unmukti held discussion for the government formation on Thursday, but failed to strike a deal.

Lawamker of Loktantrik Samajbadi Party, Upendra Mahato, informed that the meeting held at Province Assembly secretariat was also attended by Province Assembly members.

Krishna Prasad Yadav of Nepali Congress and Jitendra Sonal of Loktantrik Samajbadi Party are the most likely candidates vying for the Chief Minister’s post. They have forwarded discussions with other parties on their favour.

Sonal has argued that he could not even get the chance of floor test due to maneuvering of the Maoist Centre and the Janamat Party, so he deserves the Chief Minister post now.

JSP Nepal’s Chief Whip Ram Ashish Yadav informed that the Nepali Congress and the Loktantrik Samajbadi Party were given additional time to forge agreement. The seven political parties will hold next round of meeting this night as well and strike a deal accordingly, he added.

Province Chief Surendra Labh gave a deadline of 5:00pm Friday to the political parties/leaders to stake their claims for Chief Minister as per Article 168 (2) of the constitution after UML leader Saroj Kumar Yadav stepped down as Chief Minister on Wednesday.
